Spending Thanksgiving in Aspen Snowmass is a magical experience. With smaller crowds, milder weather, and seasonal specials throughout town, Thanksgiving offers a unique and family-friendly experience for visitors looking to spend their holiday in the Roaring Fork Valley.
Here are some of our favorite reasons why an Aspen Thanksgiving is one to remember:
The Start of Ski Season
Thanksgiving weekend also kicks off the winter season with opening day for Aspen Mountain and Snowmass. While the Thanksgiving holiday may be the “star” of the week, Aspenites know the anticipation surrounding the start of ski season is a celebration in itself.
Although opening day is a big event in the area, the weekend is typically quieter, with shorter lift lines and more room to ski and ride. Take advantage of the smaller crowds by exploring the available open terrain and enjoying the slower pace. After a day on the mountain, take part in the apres festivities which are sure to be particularly festive.
For more information on opening day, head to the Aspen Snowmass website for details on lift tickets and equipment rentals.
Nordic Skiing
If you are looking to avoid lift lines and get an amazing workout, Nordic skiing on one of the many cross-country trails in the area is a great option. Before heading out, make sure to check on the conditions as availability is dependent on the snowpack. Lessons are also available in the winter via the Aspen Nordic Center in the Aspen Golf Club.
Outdoor Fun
With November’s mild weather, Aspen offers more than skiing and snowboarding. On warmer days, you can get out on the water for fly fishing or hike one of the many available trails. Thrillseekers can ride the Breathtaker Alpine Coaster situated adjacent to Elk Camp Restaurant. Winding its way through over a mile of forest, this unique ride hits speeds up to 28 mph! Reservations are required. Buy online, call 866-857-8769, or purchase in person at any ticket office; tickets are non-transferable. Activities are weather-dependent and subject to cancellation.
In the late fall/winter season, ice skating is another fun holiday activity available to the public at Aspen Ice Garden and Lewis Ice Arena. The ice rinks are open daily from mid-November to mid-March. Rental skates and lockers are available, and tickets can be purchased online or in person.
Off Season Specials
While things are still calm around the valley, the majority of dining and lodging establishments have reopened for ski season; and many offer deals and discounts to both tourists and locals.

There are several restaurants in the Aspen area offering Thanksgiving dinner options, but the selection varies every year.
