The Anderson Ranch Arts Center serves to cultivate an artistic vision and creative understanding in people of all ages. A festive community event that gets everyone in the holiday spirit, the annual Anderson Ranch Holiday Open House is a great opportunity to view and purchase artwork by Anderson Ranch artists-in-residence and faculty, tour the beautiful Ranch grounds, and meet fellow art lovers. During the Holiday Open House, the studios are open to all visitors, offering a unique behind-the-scenes glimpse at the art-making process.

Each art-making method has its own large studio space, so from building to building, visitors are immersed in the world of photography, then painting and printing, and then ceramics and sculpture and woodworking.

As the Holiday Open House is usually held in mid-December, the event is the perfect opportunity to do a little holiday shopping, as well as to support local, national, and international artists. Most, if not all, of the artworks on display in each of the studios is for sale. Oftentimes, the artists are in their studio to discuss their work with visitors and interested buyers.

In addition to each of the studios, Anderson Ranch also has a gallery space, so be sure to swing by the gallery building, which is located near the parking lot.

After touring the campus, head over to the Ranch Café for a casual holiday dinner. Enjoy a delicious meal, and chat about all of the incredible artwork that you just saw.

Free Snowmass Summer Concerts

Event Cultural Family Friendly Nightlife Outdoor Slopeside Mall Snowmass Village

The free Snowmass summer concerts on Fanny Hill are held on Thursdays during the summer season. Fanny Hill is an amphitheater venue at 8500 feet with a 4000 person capacity. Each week, a new band performs a free, outdoor concert, and musicians range from rock 'n' roll to funk to R&B to country. Check out one or all of these free concerts, since there's nothing like spending a beautiful summer evening on Fanny Hill, listening to live music. The Snowmass free summer concerts welcome new names each summer, so you're guaranteed to discover a favorite, new band year after year. 

Concerts are held on the Fanny Hill Concert Stage at the end of the Snowmass Mall. We recommend taking the free RFTA bus service from Aspen and the Intercept Lot, or the free Village Shuttle service throughout Snowmass. It is best to get off at the Snowmass Mall stop.

From the smooth and gentle banks of the Verde trail to the technical singletrack of Animal Crackers, Snowmass Bike Park delivers all your favorite aspects of a winter ski experience, except for the snow. Join us for a free flowing adventure through our high elevation evergreen forests and moderately pitched Aspen tree groves and see for yourself.

The Roaring Fork Valley, home to Aspen and Snowmass, is now designated an IMBA Gold-Level Ride Center, one of only 7 in the world and the only Gold-Level Ride Center in Colorado!

Mountain bike rentals are available at Four Mountain Sports in the Snowmass Village Mall and in the Snowmass Base Village near the Elk Camp Gondola. However, mountain bikes are also available for rent at any of the other Four Mountain Sports locations in Aspen and at Aspen Highlands. Four Mountain Sports rents out downhill and cross country mountain bikes for adults and children.

Mountain bikers can also register for downhill and freeride mountain biking clinics in Snowmass to learn the art of maneuvering on a mountain bike over rocks and along tight switchbacks. Mountain bikers ages 16 and older are welcome to sign up for these daily group mountain bike clinics held throughout the summer season. Mountain bikers must register for group lessons.

For the younger set, Camp Aspen Snowmass offers kids' mountain biking lessons for kids ages 8 – 15. Kids will learn the essential skills of downhill riding from a trained and professional mountain biking guide, and explore Snowmass Mountain biking trails suitable for their skill level.

Owl Creek Chase

The Owl Creek Chase is a cross-country ski race in Snowmass Village, CO. The first race took place in 1985. The race starts at the Snowmass Cross Country Center and ends at the Aspen Cross Country Center. The Owl Creek Chase course is 21 kilometers of fun skiing and beautiful views.

Owl Creek Chase offers a classic race and a skate race, with prize money awarded for the classic race.

If you don’t want to race, you can sign up for the Owl Creek Chase Tour. It’s the same course, but without the competitive element. You get to enjoy all of the race amenities, like aid stations and a free shuttle from Aspen to Snowmass after the race.

Rafting in Aspen and Snowmass

Though a landlocked state, water sports are still a popular outdoor activity in Colorado, especially whitewater rafting. In Aspen and Snowmass, there are a handful of rafting companies that offer guided rafting trips on the Roaring Fork River, Colorado River, and Arkansas River.

Find out which guided raft trip is best for you and your group. The Pine Creek/Numbers sections on the Arkansas River offers the chance for expert paddlers to tackle Class IV and V rapids. For a great family-friendly rafting trip, the Class II and III whitewater rapids on the Colorado River, called the Shoshone run, offers lots of fun. Floating on a raft through Glenwood Canyon right outside of Glenwood Springs lets you soak up some sunshine, take in the amazing views of the Canyon walls, and enjoy stretches of exhilarating rapids followed by intermittent sections of quiet, calm waters.

Getting outfitted with the appropriate rafting gear will make for an enjoyable time on the river. It's never fun to lose a favorite pair of sunglasses, so make sure they stay in place with a sunglasses strap. The same goes for footwear. If rafting in the summer, wear sandals that can be securely strapped to the feet, especially around the heel. During colder weather rafting trips, rafting guides provide neoprene booties. As for clothing, it's best to wear layers of quick dry clothing. For summer rafting, wear a bathing suit underneath a layer or two of quick dry clothing. For cold weather rafting trips, the most comfortable clothing to wear is a wetsuit and a splash jacket, both of which are provided by rafting companies. Top everything off with a hat and sunscreen, and you're ready to hit the river.

What better way to close out the end of a spectacular ski season than by watching, or participating in, an outrageous on-mountain event involving DIY watercraft and a pond? Schneetag, which is German for "snow day", has become a popular closing day activity on Snowmass Mountain. The activity involves teams barreling down a run on Snowmass Mountain in a homemade watercraft. Sometimes, these fun DIY watercraft make it over the pond, but there are also times when engineering fails the participants, and leaves them swimming their way out of a chilly man-made pond. Snowmass Balloon Festival events are also held under the cover of darkness when the hot air balloons light up like enormous lanterns in the night sky.
